How this calculator works
Use the garden area and layer depth to estimate mulch volume and approximate bag count. The result is an estimate and may vary with the product, site conditions, measurement accuracy and installation method.
Before you use the estimate
- Measure the area carefully and keep units consistent.
- Review any waste allowance and material coverage assumptions.
- Check the product packaging or supplier specifications before purchasing.

Frequently asked questions
How much mulch do I need for a garden bed?
A 3-inch layer is standard. Enter your bed’s length and width above and the calculator returns cubic yards plus bag counts.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches for most beds; 3–4 inches to suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from plant stems.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
About 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags per cubic yard. For large beds, buying in bulk by the yard is usually cheaper. Cubic feet vs. cubic yards, explained →
